Problem & Solution

Statement:
Throughout the healthcare industry, patient identification is a
Joint Commission National Patient Safety Goal and continues to
be an accreditation requirement. Colored wristbands are presently
used for patient safety (i.e., yellow wristband = fall risk).

The creation of the CATHBAND™ began as a patient care initiative to provide an easy and effective means to properly identify a PICC Line or Midline catheter, which improves communication and improves patient safety.

Issue:
Misidentification of a PICC Line or Midline catheter could prohibit drug administration, phlebotomy, blood transfusion, and surgical intervention. Missing procedure notes leave healthcare providers guessing the catheter size, length, and insertion date. Improper hand-off communication does not identify the catheter as ready for infusion to additional healthcare providers.
Action:
What is the CATHBAND™ and how does it help?
Correct identification of a PICC Line or Midline catheter MUST be performed before the catheter is used. The implementation of a CATHBAND™ provides the healthcare professional this information:
• Type of catheter inserted (PICC Line or Midline)
• Catheter length
• Indwell length
• Date the catheter was inserted
This information is provided on a standard pink, restricted-extremity wristband. The CATHBAND™ allows quick access to this essential information, eliminates the need for any further research before using the catheter, and ensures the patient receives therapy or treatment expediently.

Four reasons CATHBANDS™ are used
throughout the medical profession.

1. Improve the identification of
indwelled catheters.

2. Improve the effectiveness of
communication among caregivers.

3. Reduce the risk of healthcare
associated infections.

4. Improve the safety of using
medications.

CATHBANDS™ Features:

• Latex-free and Phthalate-free.

• Made of tri-laminate material that
is stretch-resistant and strong.

• Waterproof and more durable and
secure than other wristbands.

• Lightweight, which is ideal for
long-term wear.

• Features a locking plastic snap to
prevent transfer.
