PICC Line Catheter
What is it?
A PICC line (Peripherally Inserted Central Catheter) is a small tube 3Fr-6Fr, with a maximum length of 60cm, that can be inserted into a peripheral vein in the upper arm, Basilic, Cephalic or Brachial. The PICC Line catheter tip should extend into the lower third of the SVC, atrio-caval junction or upper atrium confirmed by a chest X-ray.
A PICC Line is used to infuse medication with pH levels below 5 and above 9 with osmolarity above 600mOsm/L. PICC Line catheters can remain indwelled for up to 12 months, used for blood draws and power injections
(during CT scans if pressure-rated).
Midline Catheter
What is it?
A Midline catheter is a small tube 3Fr-4Fr, usually 20cm long, that can be inserted into a peripheral vein in the upper arm, Basilic, Cephalic or Brachial. The Midline catheter tip should not extend beyond the axilla. Infused medication should have a pH level above 5 and below 9 with osmolarity below 600mOsm/L. Midline catheters are normally indwelled 1-4 weeks and cannot be used for power injections (during CT scan) or to draw blood.
